He was predeceased by: his wife Ellen Thomas (Kreitmeyer); and his daughter Renee Thomas. He is survived by: his son John 'JT' Thomas (Wendi); his stepchildren, Karin, Kirsten Lyke and Steve Lyke; his grandchildren, Haley and Tyler Thomas (Nicole Tierney); his stepgrandchildren, Jonah, Stephanie and Magena; and his siblings, James Thomas (Marilyn), Robert Thomas (Nita), Richard Thomas (Barbie), Jane Nordeen and Sally Mitchell (Archie). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
