He was predeceased by : his parents, Johnnie Butts and Willie Mae Butts (Carson); his siblings, Johnnie Mae Butts, Charles Holt, Walter Butts, Alvin Butts and Herbert Butts; and his brother-in-law Willie Gordon.

He is survived by : his wife Nora Butts; his stepchildren, Melvin Burton Jr. (Tequell) and Kendra Burton; his stepgrandchildren, A'Kasia Willis and Ta'Zaria Burton; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Khyree Diggs, Rayvone Diggs and Yahnos Cherry; and his siblings, Mary Louise Walker (Freddie), Ethel Gordon, Loretta Butts, Corliss Foster (Clifton), Jacqueline Stapples (Herman) and Blake Holt. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins.
