He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell and May Smith, Sr. (Damery); his wife Carol Sue McKinley; and his sisters, Mary Lou Harris and Bonnie Spears.

He is survived by: his children, Bryan Smith (Penny Kawakami) of Gobles, Shanna Ax (Steve) of Allegan and Kristen Bechler (Tony) of Schoolcraft; his grandchildren, Tyler, Timothy Ax, Britta Bechler, Brooklyn Barba and Ethan Penny; his great grandchildren, Alexander Bechler and Jett Barbra; and his sister Barbara Smith of Glen Arbor. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Russ' name are requested to be made to the Munising Baptist Church.
