He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parent Annie Mae Gist (Hunt); his daughters, Patricia Gist of Harrison, MI, Amy Gist of Farwell, MI and Shelly Gist of Muir, MI; his stepchildren, Christina Smith and Chris Dietrich; his sisters, Francis Berry of Dillon, SC, Netty Mae Hunt of Dillon, SC and Louise Hunt of Dillon, SC; his grandchildren, Scottie Dietrich, T. J. Bower, Cody Coburn, Hannah Bower, Glenny Coburn, Theresa Coburn and Ashley Coburn; his former wife Theresa Smith; and his sister Martha Faircloth.
