He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Fries and Agnes Fries (Carswell); his wife Nancy McDowell Fries; and his siblings, Charles Carswell Fries, Carolyn Fries Emshwiller (Carol) and Corinne Fries Dick.

He is survived by: his brother Robert McMillan Fries (Leslie).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

“Peter and Nan were like grandparents to Rachel Goodman. They participated in many of our important family activities. They took Rachel on outings and helped her feel good. They loved her. They attended birthday parties and brought her presents from their travels. When Rachel had Shirley a month early, they were the ones who ran all over Tucson looking for premie-sized clothes for a 5lb baby. Rachel named them Shirley's Great-godparents. We're still missing Nan and we'll miss Peter, too.”

“I met Peter at many a Languages and Literacies for All (formerly the Whole Language Umbrella), NCTE, and CELT gatherings, and in the home of Ken and Yetta Goodman. I always attended his sessions and learned so much each time. His understanding of the connection between linguistics and reading was insightful.
