He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank A. Schafer and Louise B. Schafer (Schafer); and his siblings, Margaret Schafer, Orielda Farner, Marie Rahl, Lillian Blasen, Beatrice Sheahan, Betty Sunderman, Donald "Nick" Schafer, Kenneth Schafer, Norman Schafer, Francis "Fran" Schafer and Mathias.
He is survived by: his wife Betty Elkins; his children, Christopher Schafer of Farwell, Wendy Hovey (Steve) of Beal City, Randall Schafer (Cathy) of Beal City, Catherine Cain (Ed) of Horton and Todd Schafer (Christine) of Beal City; and his grandchildren, Jacob Hovey, Alex, Ethan, Aaron Schafer, Hannah, Hallie, Lucas Cain, Eric, Ryan and Ty Schafer. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
