He was predeceased by: his parents, Calvin Stroup and Mary Stroup (Burch); his sister Gwen Gibson; and his grandmother May Burch. He is survived by: his wife Darlene Stroup; his sons, Gerald Stroup (Renee), William Stroup Jr. (Sandra), David Stroup (Kimberly) and Brett Stroup; his grandchildren, Christina Sherman, Nichole Fairchild (Daniel), Roxanne Dismukes (Gregory), Joseph Stroup (Chenille), Stephanie Taylor, Tyler Stroup, Haley Stroup, Hannah Stroup and Matthew Stroup; his great grandchildren, Josiah, Austin, Jayden, Janyia, Brayln, Malakai, Gregory, Evan and Bailey; his stepsiblings, Jimmy Petrey and Barbara Brickle; and his pet Daisey.
