He was predeceased by: his parents, James Shaffer and Amy Shaffer (Miller); his former spouse Shirley; his daughter Carla; his grandchildren, Doug Shaffer II and Chrystal Ward; and his siblings, Fern Skillman, Carmen Kidd, Bertha Bentley, Carl Shaffer, Vernon Shaffer, Richard Shaffer, Ron Shaffer and Arn Shaffer.

He is survived by: his wife Carla; his children, Diane Shaffer, Doug Shaffer (Kay), Denise Shaffer-Mecham (Joedee), Darwin Shaffer and Ronald Shaffer; his stepdaughter Stacy Clark (Don); and his sisters, Janice Leonard, Myrna Gillett (John), Linda Rosenberry, Beth Davis and Many. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren, other loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, family members, and dear friends.
