He was predeceased by: his parents, John Smeins and Flossie Smeins (Roland); his son-in-law George Johnson; and his siblings, John Smeins, Ruth Overend (William), Bernice Winter (Martin) and Dorothy Smeins.
He is survived by: his wife Norma Smeins of McBain; his daughter Bonnie Johnson of Marion; his grandsons, Mark Johnson (Lita) of Lansing and James Johnson of Lansing; and his parents-in-law, Gloria Smeins of Sioux Falls, Ernie Tennant (Rose) of Eaton Rapids and Susie Jakubas (Ron) of Jackson.
