He was predeceased by: his parents, LeVerne Elwin Thomas and Evelyn Hazel Thomas (Eggleston); his daughter Tonia M. Thomas; and his brother Jerry Lee Thomas. He is survived by: his wife Barbara J. Apted; his son James Thomas, Jr. (Robyn) of Marcellus; his grandchildren, Murial, Ashlee and Laura; his great grandchildren, Madelynn and Sophee; and his brother Vernon Thomas (Phyllis) of Marcellus.
