He was predeceased by: his son Christopher; his stepfather R. G. Fountain; his siblings, Jean Gill, Jo Ann Groendahl and Clifford Nicholson; his niece Kandie Groendahl; his nephews, Jack Nicholson and Dan Reinhart; and his parents-in-law, Helen Nicholson, Kenneth Groendahl and Bill Vanstee.

He is survived by: his wife Ruth Anne; his daughters, Catherine Marchiando (Pat) of Weidman, Cari Maniteau of Weidman and Chana Black (Jason) of Petoskey; his grandchildren, Brittany Pohl (Grant), Jessica Weatherwax-Marchiando, Joe Marchiando, Chinodin, Ozaawagiizhig, Naawidegiizhig, Naawikichigaamii Manito, Christopher and Trent Black; his great grandchildren, Grayden, Tanner and Dawson Pohl; his siblings, Jay Nicholson of Barryton, Carol Vanstee of Lowell and Mary Burgess (Stan) of Alto; and his sister-in-law Barb Nicholson of Delton. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
