He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Harry Smuts and Angeline Smuts; his wife Sandy; his children, Kim Skeels (Matthew), Janet Frank (Robert) and Michael (Kristine); his grandchildren, Zachary Skeels (Victoria), Alison Skeels, Leah Skeels, Lexie Frank, Tyler Frank (Liz) and Annika Smuts; his great grandchildren, Madison Skeels and Hannah Skeels; and his sister Kathryn Douglas.
In the later stages of his life, he developed Alzheimer's disease and the family would suggest that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer's Association in the hopes of finding a cure for this dreadful illness.
