He was predeceased by: his former wife Betty Hawkins (Wraight); his stepson Art Schmitz, Jr.; his parents, Dorothy Oakley (Rider) and Alger J. Hawkins; his grandfather Paul Hawkins; his sisters, Donna Richmond and Diane Platz; and his brother-in-law Clifford Kelly.
He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Swartz; his children, Elger J. Hawkins (Elizabeth), Sherry Johnson, Mike Schmitz (Lori), Michelene Carr (Ed), Melissa Archer (David), Karla Miller (Brian), Sabrina Martinez (Jay) and Jamie Schmitz (Mollie); and his sister Joyce Kelly. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
