He was predeceased by: his father Robert Shafer. He is survived by: his mother Ruth Shafer of Kalamazoo; his sisters, Sarah Shafer of Corvallis, Oregon and Martha Shafer-Thyen (Elmar Thyen); and his nieces and nephews, Sören Thyen, Arwyn Thyen of Wuppertal, Tore Thyen of Düsseldorf and Gwendolyn Thyen of Nijmegen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to hospice care at Centrica Care Navigators (https://centricacare.org) or to a charity of your choice.
