In accordance with his wish cremation will take place and he will be laid to rest at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Centrica Care Navigators Hospice, c/o the funeral home.
Age 94, passed away at his home on July 1, 2024 with family at his side. Doug was born in Holland, MI, the son of the late Raymond and Theresa (Huyser) Lemmen. Doug was kind, gentle and loving. After graduating high school, he attended Hope College and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served our country with honor. He had a passion for learning which led to a career as a teacher. He retired from the Portage Public School system where he taught fifth and sixth grade for many years. He was a voracious reader and was passionate about WWII history. When not working Doug enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved nature and took time to feed the squirls and deer. He had fond memories of sailing on Lake Michigan at his family cottage in Saugatuck, enjoyed a pint of Bell's beer, and spent hours tending to his garden. Above all Doug loved his family. He was a dedicated father and involved grandfather who leaves behind memories of a life well lived. He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Denis) Youngblood; two grandchildren, Joseph (Michelle) Youngblood and Andrew (Danielle) Youngblood; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Samantha, Ashlyn and Jason Youngblood; one great-great-grandchild on the way; a daughter-in-law, Denise Lemmen; many nieces, nephews extended family and friends. He was also preceded in passing by a son, Stephen Lemmen; siblings, Irving and Wayne Lemmen and Shirley Kammeraad.
