Age 61, passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on November 21, 2024. He was born on December 15, 1962, the son of Roger and Eleanor (Schaap) Doorn and was raised in Portage. Dave was a generous, kind, strong and faithful man. His smile would light up the room, and his enthusiasm was contagious. He lived his life to the fullest and made a difference in the lives of all those around him. He will be forever missed by his family, his friends, his athletes and his community! Dave graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School Class of 1981.
He excelled in athletics which would remain a passion for life and his loyalty to the school never wavered. On April 12, 1985, he married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Karen J. (Herder) Doorn. Together they raised two loving daughters. Dave was an involved father and was an ever-present supporter in their journey. Hard work was a staple in Dave's life. He was employed as a computer technician for EDS and later retired from Hewlett Packard after thirty-five years of service. Never one to sit still, he loved going camping with his family.
He enjoyed riding the jetski, riding snowmobiles up north and taking bike rides. He also enjoyed playing hockey. Dave loved classic cars and looked forward to showing his original 1973 Z-28 Camaro. Dave was passionate about helping others and became deeply involved with the Kalamazoo Christian Booster Club where he served as President for several years. He helped organize the Booster Golf Outing and was the "go to" man whenever something was needed. One of his greatest passions was coaching softball. He was proud to have coached his daughters for fifteen years and would remain in the dugout coaching several generations of Kalamazoo Christian girls.
He spent hours on the athletic fields, courts and golf courses. He became a father figure to many, and he leaves a great legacy behind. Dave's strong faith was a foundation of his character. He was a loyal member of Grace Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder and volunteered on many committees. Above all Dave loved his family and his friends and his memory will live on in all that they do.
