Carolyn DeVries Obituary
A service in witness to Carrie's life and faith will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd., Kalamazoo. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Carrie will be laid to rest next to Roland at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Park Village Pines, Second Christian Reformed Church or Centrica Care Navigators (formerly Hospice of SW Michigan), in c/o the funeral home.
Age 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 2, 2024. Carrie was born in Toledo, OH, on April 14, 1929, the daughter of Earl and Leila (Shoemaker) Bourdo. As a young girl she and her family moved to Orangeville. She graduated from Delton High School. One of her early jobs was working in the onion fields in Orangeville. On November 10, 1948, she married Roland DeVries who preceded her in death in 2018. Carrie had worked as a bus driver for Kalamazoo Christian Schools. She and Roland enjoyed traveling together and had visited many foreign countries while her son Roland was in the military. They also had a place at Sandy Pines which they enjoyed. Carrie's faith was important to her, and she was a long-time member of Second Christian Reformed Church. She also volunteered for Willing Workers of Kalamazoo Christian Schools. She loved to laugh and always had a smile on her face. Her family was very important to her. Carrie is survived by her children Vicki (Donald) DeVries, Peggy (William) Hauke, Roland (Dawn) DeVries, Rodney (Sarah) DeVries; grandchildren, Tim (Tara) DeVries, Tom (Stephanie) DeVries, Nick (Kim) Gianakis, Melanie (Nate) Batts, Kayla (Tyler) Knotts, Jaimie (Robert Lienhard) DeVries, twelve great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, June Bourdo; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Besides her husband, Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; son, John DeVries; brother, Earl Bourdo; sisters, Arlene Floria and Rita Erb.
