He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerald Bortell and Elsie Bortell (Shaw); his son Russell Bortell; his great grandchild Rage Nardini; and his siblings, Marjorie Gaylord, Frances Kiersey and Wendell Bortell.
He is survived by: his wife Marian Bortell; his daughters, Cynthia Chapman (Michael) of Ocean View, Denise Briggs (Mike) of Jonesville and Valerie Neeb (Jeff) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and his daughter-in-law Michelle Bortell of Battle Creek. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
