He was predeceased by: his parents, Barney Bates and Jessamine Bates (Reeves); and his brothers, Gene Bates (Lois), Harlan Bates (Beth) and Kendall Bates.
He is survived by: his children, Todd Bates (Mary) and Kelly Ostroske (Bradley) of Ithaca, MI; his grandchildren, Brianna Slater (Lucas), Zach Bates, Ryan Donley (Jenna), Sierra Bates and Joshua Bates; his great grandchildren, Claire and Cohen; and his sister Ruth Ann Cratsenburg (Carl). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
