He is survived by: his wife Mary Beth (Gerry); his children, Michael Merritt (Paula), Colette Smith (James Francis III), Melissa DeCarlo (David) and Jonathon Merritt (Katie Sonesen); his stepdaughters, Melissa Lupino (Tony) and Kelly Rooney (Sean); his grandchildren, Michael Merritt Jr., Amanda Perttula (Carl), Nik Merritt, James Francis Smith IV (Liz Belke), Timm Smith (Olivia), Janell Smith (Adam), Samantha DeCarlo and Isaac DeCarlo (Katelyn Hanrahan); his stepgrandchildren, Kathryn, Audrey Rooney, Matthew and Henry Lupino; his great grandchildren, Charles Perttula and Max Leon Smith; and his siblings, Tom Merritt (JoAnn) and Mary Margaret Waldron (Peggy). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
