He was predeceased by: his parents, Volpert "Joe" and Helene "Leni" Knerr (Buehler); his wife Gloria; his sister Helen Babcock; and his stepgrandsons, Jason and Ryan.

He is survived by: his children, Karl (Deb), Eric (Rachele), Kurt (Hideko) and Laura Marie Knerr; his grandchildren, Kayla Knerr, Kyle Knerr, Kirk Knerr and Amber Stacey; and his great grandchild Asher.
