He was predeceased by: his parents, Nate Smith and Gladys Smith (Bradstreet); his former wife Margie L. Swander; his wife Marjorie; his siblings, Jeanette Smith Klingler, Sandra Smith VanLoon and John McVay; his grandson Matthew Smith; and his stepsister Erma McVay Haeussler.

He is survived by: his sons, Ted R. Smith (Sharon) of Blissfield and Fred D. Smith (Linda) of Blissfield; his grandsons, Jason Smith (Susan) and Justin Smith; and his great grandchildren, McKenzie Smith, Aubrey Smith, Bristol Smith, Garrett Smith, Everett Smith and Aaron Smith.
