He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Gassel and Catherine Miller; his siblings, Joe and Clara; his stepson Patrick; and his grandchild Ryan.

He is survived by: his wife Carol Abfalter; his children, Susan Steenbergh (Douglas), Todd Gassel (Molly), Mike Woody (Tracey) and Joanne Berthelsen (Scott); his grandchildren, Gabriel, Danielle, Nicole, Meghan, Austin, Mackenzie, Michelle, Ava and Annabel; and his great grandchild Everly. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be given to the VA Hospital of Ann Arbor.
