Born on April 27, 1934, to the late Joseph and Stella Gendzwill (nee. King). After graduating Houghton High, she received a degree in nursing from Marquette University. She then returned to Houghton and while working at Michigan Tech student health services she met Warren Otto Weingarten, whom she married on December 31st, 1960. After a stint in Albuquerque, NM, Warren and Joann returned to the UP, where Joann began teaching nursing at Lake Superior State College. During summers, when she was not teaching classes, she could be found at Camp 8 with her family. Along the way, she earned a master's degree in nursing education from Wayne State University. In 1984, the family moved to Houghton and Joann became an instructor of nursing at Suomi College. In her later years, during retirement, she loved to read, cook and see her grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic and regularly attended Sunday mass. She also enjoyed Aquafit well into her 70s, and only stopped at the age of 80.
