He was predeceased by: his parents, Byrd Mayes and Ada Mayes (Marsee); his son Richard Wayne Mayes II; his sisters, Margaret Scott and Wilma Morgan; and his half-siblings, Ray Mayes and Mildred Mayes.
He is survived by: his wife Gloria Mayes of Newport; his children, Anna Furlong (Ed) of Toledo, Ohio, Wayne Holcomb (Rhonda) of New Albany and Michael Mayes (Scott) of Newport, Michigan; his siblings, Kay Eoff of Monroe, Opha Thomas of Harlan, Kentucky and Vernon Mack Mayes (Jean) of Erie, Michigan; and his grandchildren, Kristine, Sarah, Jonathan, Dakota, Krista and Riley. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
