He was predeceased by: his parents, Augusta Helmstadt (Niederbühl) and John Helmstadt; and his sister Colleen. He is survived by: his wife Mary Josephine Stampfel; his children, Ronald John Helmstadt (Sandra) of Bridgeport and Kathy Ann Helmstadt of Smyrna, Delaware.; his grandchildren, Kevin Hertz (Kristy), Kyle Hertz, Kay Hauer, Marie, Louis Helmstadt (Leslie H.) and Caroline Clolinger (Julien); his great grandchildren, Konnor, Landon and Stella; his nephew Fred Pelligrino; his cousin Janet Heppenheimer; and his friends, Arlene Riviera and Beth Ottesen.
