He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Hess and Dolores Hess (Lay); and his granddaughter Gracie. He is survived by: his wife Penny; his children, Shaunene Hess and Chris Hess (Kayla); his grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler, Keegan, Alandra, Kodi, Kaylie, Jasmine, Kaitlynn, Dalton and Christian; and his siblings, Linda Lasinski (Tom), Darlene Thompson (Delton), Jimmy Hess (Gloria), Tom Hess (Darlene) and David Hess (Lori Lothamer). He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
