He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Ruben Schmidt and Mabel Schmidt (Walther); his children, Joe Schmidt Sr. (Josephine), Antonette Schmidt and Annette Lee; his grandchildren, Joe Schmidt Jr., Chris Schmidt (Krystal), Amber Schmidt, Cassandra Lambert, Lance Mendyka (Teagon), Ryan Mendyka (Sandy), Kaylee, Darrian Pyscher, Josh, Shawn Booth, Ashley Morang and Stephanie Smith (Joshua); his stepchildren, Sheri DeSmet (William), Cindy MacNeill and Arnold Dellar (Lorna); his daughter Diana Orban; and his grandson Chad Killen. He was also cherished by 11 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
