He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Thornburg and Cleo Eva Thornburg (Hart); his siblings, Betty Jo Thornburg, Roy Thornburg, Lola Hansen, Patricia Varney, Clarence Thornburg and Charles Thornburg; his grandson Bradley Bowser; his stepson Paul Garcia; and his stepgrandson Zach Morgan.
He is survived by: his wife Jan Thornburg of Greenville; his children, Penny Porter of Greenville, Harold Thornburg of Greenville, Loyce (Carlos Thomas) and Norma (Phil Moss); and his stepchildren, Alan, Pam Garcia of Milan, Pennie Morgan of Montrose, Peggy and David Lee of Flushing. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
