We bid farewell to Philip J. Hertel (Grand Rapids, Michigan), born in Detroit, Michigan, whose journey of life gracefully concluded on May 11, 2024 at the age of 87. Philip touched countless lives with warmth and kindness, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever echo in hearts. He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Joseph Hertel and Gladys Hertel; his wife Peggy; his children, Shareen Hertel (Donald Swinton), Heidi Hertel and Joseph Hertel (Donna Hertel); his grandchildren, Garrett Vonk (Natacha Joyce), Gavin Vonk, Tessa Hertel, Josephine Swinton and Commodore Hertel; and his great grandchild Miles Vonk. He was also cherished by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

“I tried to thank him, but all of the email addresses I found on Google came back undelivered. He really meant a lot to me, more than I ever realized. I was pretty sure he would remember me too. “My condolences. I haven't seen "Mr. Hertel" in 35+ years, but I actually tried to contact him a few months ago. Our church gave a sermon about mentors we have had in life. I thought of all my coaches, friends dad's, etc, but I could not think of who mine was. Then Mr. Hertel popped into my head. He tried very hard to guide me on the right path, but unfortunately I didn't pay much attention at the time. I now know, and appreciate, all he was trying to tell me. (1 of 2)”
