He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Gerald Carpenter and Carolyn Carpenter (Nickels); his wife Susan; his children, Tammy Root (Scott) of Vicksburg, Jenny Johnson of Kalamazoo, Wesley Batema (Bree) of Missouri, Holly Dunithan (Justin) of Kalamazoo, Katy Hood (Dave) of Gobles, Tim Hosner (Jennifer) of Allegan and Monica Mansfield (Mike) of Mattawan; and his siblings, Cindy Shah of Lansing, Laurie Shick of Kentucky and Randy Carpenter. He was also cherished by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to Centrica Hospice or to an American Legion Post of donor's choice.
