Verne B. Purdy Obituary

Verne B. Purdy, a man of wisdom, creativity, and boundless love, passed away peacefully at his home in Sugar Springs, Gladwin, Michigan, on January 3, 2025. Born on August 9, 1942, in Durand, Michigan, to the late Kenneth and Emma (Teichman) Purdy, Verne's life was a testament to his dedication to family, education, and community.

Verne's journey began alongside his loving wife of 48 years, Nancy (Barton) Purdy, whom he married on March 19, 1976, in Saginaw, Michigan. Their union was blessed with two children, Peter M. (Melissa) Purdy, and their children Madison and Kyle, and the late Rebecca, who preceded him in death in 2016. Verne's legacy is also carried on by his "best buddy" grandson, Jacob V. Purdy, and his four brothers, Gary (Kate Gillespie) Purdy, Tom (Terry Johnson) Purdy, Carl (Carol Davis) Purdy, and Ted A. Purdy. Although he was preceded in death by three of his brothers, Gary, Carl, and Ted, Verne's spirit continues to resonate through his many nieces and nephews.

A proud alumnus of Michigan State University, Verne graduated in 1965 with a BS Degree in Education. His passion for teaching led him to his first job at Reese Public Schools, where he taught math and physics. Verne's commitment to education was evident during the teacher strike in February 1971, where he was an officer with the Reese 44, a group of teachers who played a pivotal role in the bargaining process for Michigan's teachers. The group's impact is commemorated with a poster on the MEA's Wall of Honor in Lansing, MI.

Following the strike, Verne chose to share his knowledge with Vietnam veterans by teaching building trades, a decision that paved the way for his successful construction business, Verne Purdy Builder, Inc. His reputation for honesty, hard work, and expertise led to the construction of several custom homes and commercial businesses in the Thumb and Saginaw area. Verne's leadership skills shone as he served as president of the Home Builders Association of the Thumb and the Reese Chambers of Commerce.

After 35 years in the industry, Verne retired and, with Nancy, began a new chapter in Sugar Springs, Gladwin. There, he remodeled their cottage into a dream retirement home in 2005 and continued to assist residents with small remodeling jobs. Verne's love for classic cars was reignited when his grandson Jacob found an exact replica of Verne's first new car, a 1967 Red Oldsmobile 442 convertible. Together, they enjoyed participating in car shows and cruising around Sugar Springs, creating cherished memories.

Verne was a pillar of strength and a source of wisdom for his family and friends. His creative spirit and loving nature touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of cherished memories and lasting impressions. Verne Purdy's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of dedication, love, and service. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

As we bid farewell to Verne, we reflect on a life well-lived, a community enriched, and a family loved. His story does not end with his passing but continues in the hearts of those he inspired. Verne B. Purdy's journey through life was one of purpose, passion, and profound impact, and his memory will be treasured eternally.
