He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur and Signe Swanson (Klegseth). He is survived by: his wife Nina Swanson (Malnar); his children, Ted Swanson (Carol) of Gladstone, David Swanson of Menominee, Teri Carlson (Jim) of Escanaba, Tammy Carlson (Bob) of Escanaba and Diane Barnhart (Erik) of Escanaba; his sister Annie Flack (Bill) of Minneapolis; and his close friends, Nathan Langager (Karen) and John Ferrari. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
