He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Chuck and Delores Hawthorn; and his stepfather James Tatrow. He is survived by: his parents, Robert "Butch" Vertz of Manistique and Debbie L. Tatrow of Garden; his siblings, Robert Vertz (Penny) of Garden and Kathi Lesica (Jason Williams) of Manistique; his niece Leah Marie Vertz (Timothy Coble) of Garden; his nephew Logan Robert Vertz of Garden; and his close friends, Bernie Bodette and Mark Traun.
