He was predeceased by: his parents, James William and Virginia Elizabeth Bates (Brooks); and his brothers, Dick and Don Bates. He is survived by: his wife Carol Jean; his children, Robert James Bates (Cheryl) of Hampshire, TN and Tina Marie Hylton (Darren) of St. Augustine, FL; his grandchildren, Daniel Bates of Lewisburg, TN, Cheyenna Mayfield (Doug) of Spring Hill, TN, Julian Hylton of St. Augustine, FL and Adrian Hylton of St. Augustine, FL; his great grandchildren, A. J. and Lilly; and his siblings, Jim Bates of Mancelona, Betty King (Dennis) of Durand and Bonnie Wooten (Ken) of Pensacola, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
