He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis J. Schafer and Matilda Schafer (Schlicht); his wife Jean Heckman; and his brothers, Leon Schafer and Julius Schafer.
He is survived by: his children, Michael Schafer of Christiansburg, VA, Vicki Horak (Paul) of Fowler, MI and Richard Schafer (Sandy) of Fowler, MI; his grandchildren, Whitney Zirkle (Matt), Annah Horak, Thomas Horak (Marlena), Gabrielle Richardson (Arthur), Sidney Horak, Dominic Horak, Roman Schafer and Nicholai Schafer; his great grandchildren, Mark, Daniel and Jeana Zirkle; his grandsons, Henry and Samuel Horak; his sisters, Sister Pauline Schafer, Sister Caroline Schafer, Irene Ayles, Helen Thelen, Julia Schueller and Mary Antes (Dave); and his sisters-in-law, Donna Schafer and Betty Schafer. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
