He is survived by: his wife Janet Payne; his sons, Jeff Schmidt (Lea) and Joel Schmidt; his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Brendan, Rachel Schmidt and Gabby Bynum; and his brother Karl Schmidt, Jr. (Kay).

Jim's family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
