Jamie Helbling wrote a sympathy message

“This obituary is so lacking. He was a math genius, served in the Korean war, delivered mail all over Elkhart IN, and was well known for his onions, cantaloupe and gladiolas from his farm. He taught many of his nieces and nephews their work ethic as they spent their summers working on his farm, and though we worked hard, we also played hard. Our lunch hour always included some games. Uncle Tom always found ways to make us think or be physically active. He inspired us to do better/be better.”
