He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Ophelia Hanson; his children, Lee Anne D'Andrea (Robert), Shari Lynne Guitar, John Marx Hanson and Nora Lee Applebee (BJ); his siblings, Pearl Timar, Edna Cosby, Olga Mailey (Pat) and Trygve Hanson (Kathleen); and his grandchildren, Kristina Behm (Patrick) and Robert Lief Applebee.

The family ask that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in lieu of flowers.
