He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence R. Sterling and Mary Jo Sterling (Cale); his siblings, Robert Sterling and Linda Beebe; and his nephew Ben Sterling.

He is survived by: his former wife Kathy Turner; his children, Nick Sterling (Salena) of Ohio and Mary Jo (Butler); his granddaughter Mazey Sterling of Ohio, Illinois; and his brothers, Rick Sterling (June) of Verona and Robbie Huffstodt (Janet) of Valparaiso, Indiana. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.
