He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl Shell and Ruby Shell; his son Brian Shell; and his sister JoAnne East (Don). He is survived by: his wife Carol Danhausen; his children, John Shell (Sherry) and Marcie Keusch (William); his grandchildren, John Shell (Desiree), Taylor Strunk (Matthew), Joshua and Hannah Shell; his great grandchildren, Norah, Aubree Shell, Landon and Caleb Strunk; and his brother Willard Shell (Cathy).
