He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil Smith and Angela Smith (Ptaszkiewicz); his wife Leona Mozelle Duncan; his siblings, Marylin Wilson, Robert Smith, Richard Smith and Gerald Smith; and his great grandchild Caroline Mozelle Paul.

He is survived by: his children, James Smith (Linda) of Dowagiac, Lori Van Voorhis (Charlie) of Chandler, AZ, Anne Edgerly (Ernie) of Hartford, Nancy Staley (Robert) of Dowagiac and Alan Smith (Krista) of Dowagiac; and his sisters, Patricia Shaer (Ollie) of Dowagiac and Kathleen Williamson (Roger) of Conway, AR.. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren.
