He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Glenn, Charlotte Peel, William and Frances Schafer; his uncle Raymond Schafer; his sisters, Lorraine "Lori" Branstrom and Sandra Tucker; his stepfather David Tucker; and his close friend Dennis Marcusse.

He is survived by: his parents, Virginia Lois Schafer (Peel) and William "Bill" Roger Schafer (Janet); his siblings, William "Bill" Gaylord Schafer and Deborah Kay Shaw (Alex); his brother-in-law Bryan Branstrom; his aunts, Jackie Millard, Janet Kay Maher and Kathy Schafer; and his uncle Robert Peel (Robin). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
