He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Rea Bates and Klair Bates (Hunter); his wife Ellen Mohney; his siblings, Thomas Bates (Cathie) of Easly, SC and Eleanor Seavey of Zeeland; his siblings-in-law, Joe Mohney of Brownsville, TX, Larry Mohney (Phyllis) of Frohna, MO, Bill Mohney (Linda) of Vicksburg, MI, Mark Mohney of Casco, WI, Patricia Makowski (Stan) of Vicksburg, MI, Mary Soule of Baldwin, MI, Brenda Wayne (Clyde), Connie Mohney of Kalamazoo, MI and Diane Mohney of Kalamazoo, MI; his grandchildren, Jake Weems, Allison Weems, Bailee Smallwood (Dustin) and Bodee Bates; his great grandchildren, Maizee and Bo Smallwood; and his pet Tony. He was also cherished by many loving nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Branch County Fair.
