He was predeceased by: his parents, Archie Bates and Cecelia Bates (Prue); and his siblings, Loraine Lentini, James, Robert, Raymond, Archibald and Larry Bates.

He is survived by: his wife Gwen Kalakay; his sons, Founded, Paul Sestina (Stephen) and Nick Bates (Angel); his siblings, Irene Plouffe, Nancy Orlando, Lois French, David, Gary and Mike Bates; his grandchild Venture Bates; and his brother-in-law Larry Kalakay. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or Memorial contributions may be given to the family for future designation.
