He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Hietala and Impi Hietala (Lehto); his wife Beverly Niemi; and his siblings, Ruth Kangas, Gordon, Arthur and Kenneth.
He is survived by: his sister-in-law Esther Hietala; and his brother Richard Hietala of Chassell.
