He was predeceased by: his parents, Anthony Novotny and Frieda Novotny (Vanderhagen); his sons, Lawrence Leon Rhine, Antonio Frank Rhine and George Albert Rhine; and his brothers, Edward and William Novotny.
He is survived by: his wife Catherine; and his children, Kathleen (Timothy) of Charlevoix, Chery Ripley (Robert) of Traverse City, James Novotny Jr. of Charlevoix, Jeffery (Cynthia) of Charlevoix, Victoria Rhine of Fayetteville, NC and Pat Rhine (Sarah) of Parkton, NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild.
