He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Carl Schaefer and Cordelia Schaefer; his wife Theresa Ann Dutton; his children, Walter, Mike, Dale, Mark, Tom, Todd and Dawn; his friend Tom Petersmark; and his siblings, Mildred, Marge, David and Louis. He was also cherished by fifteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
