He was predeceased by: his parents, Fordson Essex and ElDora Essex (Boice); his stepmother Norma; his sister Colleen; his stepbrothers, Darrell and John; and his brother-in-law Ray Roller.
He is survived by: his wife Michelle "Shelly" Kleinhans; his daughter Sissy Avery (Norman); his grandsons, James VanTassel (Vel), Marcus William and Patrick Haas (Tiffany); his great grandchildren, Daizy, Anthony, Ava and Juliette; his siblings, Gene Essex (Marylou), Jewel Roller and Crickett Hamilton (Dale); and his stepsister Faye Strayer (Carol).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Essex Family.
