He was predeceased by: his parents, John Frank and Alta Carrie Cookson (Ball); his son Clyde Richard Cookson; and his siblings, George, Oscar Cookson, Pearl Curtis and Pauline Gass.
He is survived by: his wife Esther Cookson; his children, Robin Brock (Robin) of Marquette, Shelby Baker (Eugene) of Westland, Gaye Oliver (Paul) of Morley, Leann Cookson of Romulus and Frank Cookson of Westland; his stepsons, Darrell Fenstermacher (Mary Beth) of Big Rapids, Stephan Fenstermacher of Big Rapids and Martin Fenstermacher (Michele) of Big Rapids; and his siblings, Betty Durham of Alabama, Billie Little (Jimmy) of Alabama and Robert Cookston (Melba) of Alabama. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
